Who The Hell Is... Magik?

October 21, 2024

Among Marvel's many magical heroes, Illyana Rasputin, better known as Magik, stands out as one of the most unique. As the younger sister of Colossus and the ruler of the demonic dimension Limbo, Magik is both a powerful sorceress and a skilled mutant. Her complicated life, torn between Earth and Limbo, has given her a dark and conflicted edge, but she's also proven herself to be a fierce protector of her friends and teammates, often stepping into leadership roles when needed.

Magik's power centers on her mastery of teleportation and sorcery, as well as her iconic weapon, the Soulsword — a manifestation of her control over Limbo's eldritch magic. With abilities that allow her to teleport across vast distances, summon demons, and wield a sword made from her own soul, Magik is a force to be reckoned with.

Magik perhaps became most well-known to non comic readers as a playable character in tactical RPG Midnight Suns, where her teleportation abilities and demonic powers are put to good use. In Midnight Suns, Magik specializes in creating portals to reposition enemies, allowing players to control the battlefield by forcing opponents into advantageous positions for follow-up attacks.

Who is Magik?

Magik was born Illyana Rasputin, the younger sister of Piotr Rasputin, also known as Colossus of the X-Men. Her life took a sharp turn when she was kidnapped and taken to the demonic dimension of Limbo by the sorcerer Belasco. Over time, Illyana learned to wield Limbo's dark magic and eventually overthrew Belasco, taking the throne of Limbo for herself. Though she reclaimed her freedom and returned to Earth, Limbo's influence remained with her, permanently affecting her personality and powers.

One of Magik's most iconic abilities is the creation of Stepping Discs, which allow her to teleport herself and others across space and time. This ability gives her unparalleled mobility in battle and makes her a crucial asset to teams like the New Mutants and the X-Men. Despite her dark past and struggles with the demonic forces within her, Magik consistently uses her powers to protect her allies and defend Earth from supernatural threats.

Magik's journey as a character has been one of constant growth and struggle. From her childhood imprisonment in Limbo to her eventual mastery of its magic, she has become one of the most powerful sorceresses in the Marvel Universe. Her complex relationships with her teammates, her brother Colossus, and the forces of Limbo add layers of depth to her character, making her one of the most fascinating heroes in Marvel's roster.

Magik in Marvel Rivals: Queen of Limbo

In Marvel Rivals, Magik's abilities bring her iconic Stepping Discs, demonic magic, and Soulsword to the forefront, making her a potent damage dealer and disruptor on the battlefield. Her unique mobility and demon-summoning abilities allow her to dart around enemies, dealing damage while keeping herself alive by tranforming damage dealt into bonus health for herself.

Magik's Stepping Discs ability is a signature move, allowing her to teleport short distances. This gives her excellent mobility, enabling her to dodge incoming attacks or quickly reposition herself on the battlefield. After teleporting, she can follow up with Eldritch Whirl, swinging her Soulsword in a devastating spin that damages enemies in her path.

This combo allows Magik to get in and out of combat quickly, striking enemies and then retreating before they can retaliate. Her Soulsword is particularly effective against supernatural and magical foes, giving her an edge in certain matchups.

After teleporting through a Stepping Disc, Magik can also summon a Limbo demon to attack enemies with Demon's Rage. This ability brings an extra layer of pressure to her opponents, as the summoned demon adds damage while Magik herself continues to fight. Combining teleportation, sword strikes, and demon summoning makes Magik a versatile and dangerous character who can overwhelm enemies through a mix of physical and magical attacks.

Umbral Incursion is a mobility-based offensive ability that allows Magik to dash forward and launch an enemy upward, interrupting their actions. This move is perfect for catching enemies off-guard, disrupting their abilities, and setting them up for a follow-up attack. Umbral Incursion gives Magik the ability to control the pace of the fight, knocking enemies out of position and making them vulnerable to her powerful Soulsword attacks.

Magik's ultimate ability, Darkchild, is a transformation that enhances all her abilities. When she embraces the Darkchild persona, Magik taps into the full demonic power of Limbo, gaining additional strength and durability. In this form, her attacks hit harder, and she becomes even more resilient, making her a dangerous opponent who can take over the battlefield.

Darkchild represents Magik at her most powerful, when she fully unleashes the darker aspects of her soul. This ultimate ability is perfect for turning the tide of a difficult fight, allowing Magik to overpower her enemies with a combination of demonic fury and raw magical power.

Magik's team-up ability, Disc Master, allows Black Panther and Psylocke to use her Stepping Discs for quick travel. This adds a layer of strategic mobility to team-based combat, as it allows Magik to facilitate rapid repositioning for herself and her allies.

In Marvel Rivals, Magik brings her dark, magical prowess to bear, utilizing her teleportation, demon-summoning abilities, and mastery of the Soulsword to dominate the battlefield. Her versatile kit allows her to quickly move in and out of combat, deal damage, and sustain herself, making her a formidable opponent and a valuable teammate.
