Groot is a vanguard in Marvel Rivals, excelling at controlling the battlefield, protecting teammates, and disrupting enemy plans. His primary role is to create space for his team by placing Thornlash Walls and Ironwood Walls, which block enemy attacks, line of sight, and movement while providing utility for allies. Groot’s walls are central to his playstyle, as they can be "Awakened" with his passive ability, Flora Colossus, to either attack nearby enemies or grant bonus health to Groot and his team when they deal damage near the walls.

Groot’s ultimate ability, Strangling Prison, is a powerful crowd-control tool that pulls enemies into a central location and traps them, making them vulnerable to follow-up attacks from allies. While Groot doesn’t deal high single-target damage, his utility and durability make him an essential part of many team compositions. He pairs well with strategists like Rocket Raccoon or Cloak & Dagger, who can heal him and benefit from the space he creates. Groot is particularly strong against melee-heavy teams but struggles against flying heroes like Storm or Iron Man, who can bypass his walls entirely.

How to play Groot in Marvel Rivals

Focus on positioning and using your walls strategically to control the flow of battle. Start fights by placing Thornlash Walls or Ironwood Walls in choke points or around objectives to block enemy advances or protect your teammates. Use Thornlash Walls offensively to trap enemies in tight spaces while dealing damage through their "Awakened" attacks. Alternatively, place Ironwood Walls defensively near your team to provide bonus health during engagements.

Groot’s basic attack, Vine Strike, is a ranged projectile that works well for poking enemies from a distance. Pair it with Spore Bomb, a throwable cluster bomb that deals area-of-effect damage when enemies are grouped together. This combo is particularly effective after using Strangling Prison, as it locks enemies in place for easy follow-up attacks.

Timing your ultimate ability, Strangling Prison, is critical in team fights. Use it when enemies are grouped together or when your team is ready to unleash their strongest abilities. This can turn the tide of battle by locking down key targets and allowing your allies to secure kills.

Groot Lore in Marvel Rivals

When the Milano crashed, Groot stood around for a while watching Rocket and Quill argue about whose fault it was, but pretty soon he got distracted by the voices he was hearing from the jungle surrounding the ship graveyard. The vines and trees and flowers all had voices, but Groot was far enough away that he couldn't tell what they were saying. Eventually, Rocket and Quill got on his nerves enough that he had to get away from them, so he went for a walk. As he walked away, he heard Rocket say, "See? Even Groot can't take your crap, Quill. I'm gonna go find a way out of here while you sit here and pretend you know how to fix the ship!" He heard Rocket stomping away in another direction, but Groot didn't try to meet up with him. Rocket needed time by himself sometimes, and so did Groot. Especially on strange planets that stank of death. The ship had come down near one end of the graveyard containing... hundreds of other ships? Maybe more? Groot wasn't good at counting. He wandered away from the fire that burned in the Milano's crash path, finding himself at the edge of the jungle. The voices of the jungle spoke to him, and Groot stopped and stood still, trying hard to listen now that he was close enough to understand...Read Groot's full Marvel Rivals lore
