Marvel Rivals Dev Vision for Season Three
July 01, 2025
Marvel Rivals is entering its most thrilling chapter yet. Starting with Season 3, the game is shifting to a faster, bolder rhythm, with new seasons arriving every two months. Each season promises fresh heroes, abilities, and surprises. This isn't just an update; it's an evolution designed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Let's dive into what makes Season 3 a true game-changer.
The story continues to unfold in dramatic fashion. If you remember Season Zero's expedition to K'aanti, you'll recall that the Guardians didn't destroy the symbiote god — they awakened him. Now, Knull has broken free, armed with the Necrosword and an army of symbiotes. The stakes are even higher, as he has allied with Hela, the Goddess of Death, who now reigns as his "Queen in Black." The Celestial Husk has fallen, and darkness is spreading across the battlefield. Thankfully, hope arrives in the form of Jean Grey as Phoenix who joins the fight in Season 3.
As a ranged Duelist, Phoenix wields the Phoenix Force with devastating flair. She can pressure enemies head-on with area damage or disrupt formations from the flank using her agile mobility. Her unique "Tension Reaction" mechanic rewards strategic play, and her ultimate allows her to merge with the Phoenix, dealing massive damage while clearing enemy summons from the battlefield. Fans can also look forward to Blade who finally awakens in Season 3.5 and promises even more chaos.
Team-up abilities are also getting a major refresh. Four new team-up abilities are debuting, while Storming Ignition and ESU Alumnus are being retired. Phoenix infuses Wolverine with the Phoenix Force in the new Primal Flame team-up, allowing Wolverine's Berserker Rage to burn enemies and add lifesteal to his attacks. Human Torch crafts a gadget for Spider-Man, enabling a flaming web shot that applies burn damage; Spider-Man can then zip to burned enemies, triggering explosive combos. Squirrel Girl teams up with Iron Man in Stark Protocol, using nano-tech to let a squirrel ride a homing explosive drone globe. Hela joins Symbiote Shenanigans, with her Soul Drain now lashing tendrils that drag and slow enemies.
Progression and rewards are being reimagined to better fit your playstyle. The battle pass still features ten costumes at the same price but now offers more tokens, making it easier to unlock rewards quickly. The mission system has been overhauled, with weekly missions remaining active all season, so you won't miss out if you skip a week. New season-long challenges provide hefty token payouts, and accessories allow for deeper hero customization. You can now personalize heroes like Winter Soldier, Psylocke, Groot, and others using points earned in matches. MVP animations are now fully customizable, letting you mix and match any costume with any MVP pose, and your lobby background will match your equipped skin.

Visual upgrades and quality-of-life improvements abound in Season 3. Ultimate VFX can now be unlocked for your heroes' ultimates using Unstable Molecules, which are earned through the battle pass. These visual effects are your personal flair, visible only to you, while enemies see default effects. The gallery system has been streamlined, merging serials and special editions, and a new cinematics page lets you revisit story cutscenes at any time. Discord integration has been enhanced, allowing you to chat with friends in-game or stay connected even when offline. Verified university students can now enjoy ten free costumes and MVPs, with the program rolling out first in the US and UK and expanding to more regions soon.

Balance changes are on the way, informed by trends from Season 2.5, such as the rise of triple-Strategist compositions and Ultron's dominance. Vanguards are seeing adjustments, with Emma Frost being nerfed and Venom and The Thing receiving buffs. The Thing gains a new aerial leap ability, making him a threat to flying heroes. Among Duelists, Punisher's turret and ultimate charge are being toned down, while Mr. Fantastic's survivability is being slightly reduced. Namor's primary attack and ultimate are getting boosts. Strategists are also being refined, with Mantis gaining healing and utility buffs, though the Garden Revival team-up with Adam Warlock is being nerfed. Invisible Woman's healing efficiency is increasing, while Loki's ultimate charge rate and Ultron's survivability are being reduced.
Competitive play is heating up, with the first global offline event on the horizon. Eight teams have advanced from Ignite Stage One, and China's finals will be decided on July 20. Technical improvements are also being addressed, such as Nvidia GPU crashes, which can be resolved by updating to the latest drivers. Players should also note that Season 3 will not support replays from Season 2, so any favorite replays should be saved locally before the update.
Additional chroma color options are on the way
After more than just a few tweaks, Season 3 delivers a symphony of player-driven improvements. Instead of overwhelming you, the developers are empowering you with flexible missions, deeper customization, and meta shifts that reward creativity. But most of all, Marvel Rivals is doubling down on what makes it unique: heroic teamwork, explosive combos, and stories that feel epic. Suit up, connect with your squad, and dive into the darkness with Phoenix's fire at your back. The battle is evolving, and you're at the heart of it. Ignite the battle, Rivals — your legend starts now.
