Bringing Apocalypse, Gambit, and Miles Morales to Life in Marvel Rivals

November 11, 2024

There's something incredibly satisfying about dreaming up hero kits for Marvel characters, especially when you start diving deep into their powers and thinking about how they'd actually play in a game. Today we're going to be designing mechanics and kits that we'd love to see in Marvel Rivals.

We're going to bring three amazing Marvel characters to life, each one perfectly suited for a different combat role. We've got Miles Morales, the young Spider-Man with his venom blast and invisibility powers, who's perfect for the strategist role. Then there's the smooth-talking Gambit, whose explosive card-throwing abilities and kinetic energy manipulation make him an ideal duelist. And to round out our trio, we're tackling the ancient and powerful Apocalypse as our vanguard - because who better to command the battlefield than an immortal mutant powerhouse?

We'll dig into each of these characters and explore how their iconic abilities from the comics could translate into gameplay mechanics. Whether you're a fan of Miles' modern take on the Spider-Man legacy, Gambit's Cajun charm and explosive style, or Apocalypse's overwhelming presence and ancient power, we're about to turn these beloved characters into fully realized playable heroes.

Marvel Rivals Apocalypse: Vanguard

En Sabah Nur, known to many as Apocalypse, wields devastating molecular manipulation abilities that reflect his status as one of Earth's first and most powerful mutants. His primary attack involves reshaping matter into deadly projectiles, with charged shots dealing increased damage while partially healing him. His mastery over matter extends to his Techno-Organic Conversion, which passively transforms incoming damage into temporary shielding.

As a master strategist, Apocalypse can deploy an ancient pyramid structure which blasts his foes while providing crucial line-of-sight control. His presence on the battlefield is further enhanced by his ability to bestow the Mark of Apocalypse, temporarily elevating an ally to Horseman status with enhanced damage output and resilience. His ultimate ability transforms the battlefield itself into techno-organic terrain, continuously sustaining himself and nearby allies while wearing down enemies.

Molecular Reconstruction

Press and release to fire a damaging projectile. Hold down to charge the projectile, increasing its damage and healing Apocalypse on hit.

Techno-Organic Conversion

A portion of incoming damage is converted into temporary shields.

Ancient Technology

Deploy a Pyramid which blocks line of sight and fires damaging beams at nearby enemies.

Mark of Apocalypse

Designates an ally as a Horseman temporarily, granting them a damage boost and incoming damage reduction for a short time.

Age of Apocalypse

Transforms the battlefield around Apocalypse into techno-organic terrain which continuously heals Apocalypse and nearby allies. Enemies within the terrain take damage over time.

Marvel Rivals Gambit: Duelist

The charismatic Remy LeBeau brings his signature Cajun flair to combat, wielding kinetically charged playing cards as his primary weapon. His Royal Flush ability unleashes five explosive cards in a spread pattern, while his agile Bo Staff Vault provides both offensive and defensive mobility options. The Cajun Cyclone technique showcases his masterful control, deflecting incoming projectiles with explosive force. His devastating Full House ultimate ability rains down an entire charged deck for massive area damage.

Charged Cards

Throws a kinetically charged playing card.

Royal Flush

Throws five charged cards in a spread pattern.

Bo Staff Vault

Leaps in a direction with the bo staff, briefly stunning nearby enemies after landing.

Cajun Cyclone

Spin the bo staff to randomly deflect minor projectiles.

Full House

Gambit charges an entire deck of cards and throws them above him, raining down and exploding upon enemy impact. Charged cards remain on the ground for a short time and will explode if touched by an enemy.

Marvel Rivals Miles Morales: Strategist

Miles Morales combines his spider powers with unique bioelectric abilities for a strategic support role. His web shooters provide consistent damage output, while Invisibility Strike grants stealth to both himself and a marked ally. The Web Zip ability allows rapid repositioning while leaving a healing trail of bioelectric energy for allies. His Venom Pulse and Venom Support abilities demonstrate his mastery over bioelectric energy, stunning enemies while providing allies with damage resistance and enhanced combat capabilities. His passive Electric Absorption converts damage taken into healing energy for nearby allies, and his ultimate Mega Venom Blast channels this power into a massive surge that damages and slows enemies.

Web Shooters

Rapid-fire web projectiles which deal moderate damage.

Electric Absorption

Taking damage charges Miles' bioelectric meter, which also slowly fills over time. Once full, the meter is automatically expended to heal nearby allies.

Web Zip

Rapidly pulls Miles to a targeted location or ally, leaving a trail of bioelectric energy which heals allies who pass through it.

Venom Pulse

Releases a burst of bioelectric energy, interrupting nearby enemies and granting incoming damage reduction to nearby allies for a short time.

Venom Support

Channel bioelectric energy to empower an ally, granting them increased damage and movement speed for a few seconds.

Mega Venom Blast

Miles channels his bioelectric power into a massive surge, damage and slowing all enemies hit for a short time.
